Professional Jewellery Care
Cleaning & Care Services
Restore the brilliance of your most cherished pieces. Our expert jewellers use professional-grade equipment and decades of experience to bring your jewellery back to life — and to keep it there.
Every clean begins with a thorough assessment by one of our jewellers. We'll identify the best treatment for your piece and check for any wear that needs attention.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
High-frequency ultrasonic waves dislodge dirt, oils, and build-up from the most intricate settings and surfaces — restoring brilliance without abrasion. Ideal for diamond rings, gold chains, and gemstone pieces.
- Safe for gold, platinum, and most hard gemstones
- Reaches areas a brush cannot
- No harsh chemicals used
Not suitable for pearls, opals, or pieces with loose settings — we'll advise you.
Steam Cleaning
A targeted, high-pressure steam treatment removes residue and leaves metals gleaming with a wet, brilliant finish. Particularly effective on gold and platinum following an ultrasonic clean.
- Safe for delicate settings
- Chemical-free process
- Works beautifully with ultrasonic
Combined ultrasonic + steam is our most thorough clean.
Polishing & Buffing
Fine surface scratches and dullness removed — metal brought back to a high lustre. We can restore both polished and brushed finishes and treat pieces as a standalone service or combined with a full clean.
- Polished or brushed finish restoration
- Light scratch removal
- Assessed piece-by-piece
Some pieces are not suitable — we assess each item individually.
Stones look dull or flat
Built-up oils and residue reduce brilliance. Most diamonds, sapphires, and rubies clean up dramatically with a proper professional service.
Setting looks worn or feels rough
Worn claws are a security risk for your stones. Bring it in before a stone is lost — re-tipping claws is a quick repair when caught early.
Metal has lost its shine
Daily wear causes micro-scratches that dull even the most polished rings. A professional buff can restore the original finish in most cases.
Silver has tarnished heavily
Surface tarnish on silver is normal but persistent dark tarnish benefits from professional treatment rather than home remedies that can damage finishes.
A stone looks loose or wobbly
Stop wearing it immediately and bring it in. Even a tiny wobble can escalate to a lost stone quickly with normal wear.
You haven't had it checked this year
For regularly worn pieces, an annual inspection and clean is all it takes to catch problems early and keep your jewellery looking its best.
Transparent pricing — no hidden fees. All prices include GST.
Pieces purchased from Leon Baker Jewellers receive a complimentary clean whenever you visit. We'll always advise you of any charges before we begin.
Gold & Platinum
- Warm water and a drop of mild dish soap with a soft toothbrush
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth
- Remove before swimming, showering, or applying perfume
- Avoid bleach, chlorine, and harsh household cleaners
Diamonds & Hard Stones
- Soak briefly in warm soapy water, gently brush with a soft toothbrush
- Diamonds attract grease — regular cleaning maintains brilliance
- Avoid touching the stone — skin oils dull the surface quickly
- Store separately to prevent scratching softer metals
Pearls & Soft Stones
- Wipe gently after wearing with a soft, barely damp cloth
- Never soak pearls or use ultrasonic cleaners
- Avoid perfume, hairspray, and any skin products near pearls
- Store flat — hanging pearl strands will stretch the thread over time
Silver
- Tarnish is natural — use a silver polishing cloth to restore brightness
- Store in an anti-tarnish bag or soft cloth away from air
- Avoid rubber bands — they accelerate tarnishing significantly
- Bring in for a professional polish if tarnish is heavy or persistent
Storage & Daily Habits
- Each piece in a separate soft pouch or compartment
- Harder stones will scratch softer metals if stored together
- Away from direct sunlight — some coloured stones can fade
- Last on, first off — always put jewellery on after products
How often should I have my jewellery professionally cleaned?
For pieces worn regularly — especially rings and bracelets — once or twice a year is ideal. This also lets us check for loose stones or worn claws before they become a larger problem. For sentimental or high-value pieces, more frequent inspections are worthwhile.
Is ultrasonic cleaning safe for all gemstones?
Most diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and other hard stones are safe in an ultrasonic cleaner. However, emeralds, opals, pearls, tanzanite, and any stone with inclusions or fractures are not suitable. We assess every piece before we proceed and will always tell you if it's unsuitable.
Do you clean jewellery I didn't purchase from you?
Yes — we're happy to clean and assess any piece. For items not purchased from Leon Baker, our clean, polish and stone check is $50, with additional items at $20 each. Rhodium plating is from $105 (or $135 for complex pieces). Items purchased from Leon Baker Jewellers receive a complimentary clean. We'll always advise you of any charges before we begin.
Can I clean my jewellery at home between professional cleans?
For most gold and diamond pieces, warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush is perfectly safe. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cloths. Pearls, opals, and soft stones should only be wiped — never soaked. If in doubt, bring it in.
What products should I never use on jewellery?
Avoid bleach, chlorine, acetone (nail polish remover), toothpaste, baking soda (on precious metals), and any abrasive scrub. Perfumes and hairsprays can dull finishes over time — always put jewellery on last when getting ready, and take it off first when cleaning the house or swimming.
